Waikiki's Best Place to Celebrate the Lunar New Year

February 13, 2024

You can explain why the  Waikiki Beach Walk 2024 Lunar New Year celebration is the best lunar new year celebration in Waikiki in just one word: authenticity.

And Waikiki Beach Walk’s 2024 Lunar New Year celebration is Waikiki’s most authentic lunar new year celebration.

Referred to as the Chinese New Year for centuries because it is based on the traditional Chinese calendar (known as a lunisolar calendar) that originated in the 14th century, it is now commonly known as simply the Lunar New Year, with the date is based on the beginning of the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ending on the first full moon 15 days later. The Waikiki Beach Walk 2024 Lunar New Year Celebration falls right into that pocket.

The Waikiki Beach Walk Lunar New Year celebration is organized and performed by the Sing Yung Dragon & Lion Dance Association, which is about as authentic as you can get in Hawaii. They will start the celebration at 10 a.m. in the traditional way, with astounding stunts that have marked the lunar new year for centuries.

This includes the ancient and astonishing art of pole jumping, where a multiple-personnel costumed dragon leaps from slender poles high in the air.

The 2024 Lunar New Year celebration at Waikiki Beach starts with a bang as 5,000 firecrackers are ignitied at 10 a.m., followed by the amazing pole jumping.

From there it only gets more fun, as the traditional lion dance begins in the Waikiki Beach Walk Plaza, with visitors and guests invited to “feed the lion” a small honorarium. Legend has it that by feeding the lion will give you good fortune and prosperity for the coming year.

Being that 2024 is the menacing-sounding Year of the Dragon, you’d be advised to surrender a buck or two to cover the bases.
