How to Enjoy Summer in 5 Languages

July 22, 2024

One thing pretty much everyone can agree on is that summer is the best season of the year.

We’ll go a little further and say it’s the sweetest time of the year, and not only do we have five sweet ways to enjoy the beach, they are in five different languages.

ITALIAN

Someone holding a paper cup with white, pink and yellow scoops of ice cream. There is a neon pink spoon in the ice cream and a triangular waffle cone piece. Text on the picture reads IL Gelato Hawaii, Authentic Italian Ice Cream
Simply stated, Il Gelato is Waikiki’s best gelato. But where do we get the audacity to make such a bold statement?

The answer is as simple as their gelato.

First of all, Il Gelato is dedicated to the true artisan, handcrafted way it is done by the finest gelato masters in Italy.

This is a clear-cut game plan, made even more simple by a) only using their own recipes, b) employing authentic Italian processes (time-tested through many decades) and c) using original Italian gelato equipment.

The result is a world champion and award winning Gelato that will have you shouting “Deliziosa!”

Along with the appropriate Italian hand gestures.

FRENCH

Beachwalk Café is known for many things: Its convenient location near the beach on the corner of Kalia Road and Beach Walk (hence the name); its delicious menu of great grab’n’go items that are perfect for a quick snack, and its macarons.

We probably got you on that last one. What’s a macaron, you say?

A macaron (or aka French macaroon) is a sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond meal and a coloring of your choice.

Since the 19th century, a typical Parisian-style macaron has been a sandwich cookie filled with a ganache, buttercream or jam.

So while they may look simple (and we’ll add very playful and fun), they are a very sophisticated dessert due to their high-end ingredients and intricate preparation. Their complex textures of a delicate, crispy shell with a soft, chewy interior make them a unique and highly desirable  dessert.

Which you’d expect nothing less when speaking the language of love.

PORTUGUESE
Acai bowl in a paper cup that reads Nalu Health Bar & Cafe. The cup is placed on a long green leaf which has strawberry slices, blueberries and oats on top of it.

True to its name, Nalu Health Bar & Café is known for Its “healthy-good” menu.

Crafted from freshest locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, and organic ones at all times, the menu is a creative selection of healthy entries beloved by locals who have been longtime customers (many of them from the surfing community, which makes sense since “nalu” means “wave” in Hawaiian).

Crowning this refreshing and wholesome menu is their renowned açaí bowl, a sweet and healthy concoction that earns raves from anyone who samples one. The main reason why is because Nalu uses super, Grade A açaí berries imported from Brazil.

And since they are from Brazil, we figure if berries could talk, they’d be speaking Portuguese.

HAWAIIAN

A red t-shirt that shows a shave ice character surfing. The large text on the shirt reads "Waiola Shave Ice." There is a Reyn Spooner logo on the bottom left corner of the picture.
Reyn Spooner is famous for its deep connection to Hawaii.

In fact, that’s exactly why it rightfully claims to have the most collectible aloha shirts in the world. Reyn’s has produced some of the most sought-after, iconic Hawaiian shirt prints since it was established in Hawaii in 1955.

And they don’t limit themselves to just shirts. They also feature eclectic T-shirt designs.

Which brings us to Waiola Shave Ice.

Waiola means “living water” in Hawaiian and Waiola Shave Ice is an enchanting little mom & pop shave ice stand that hits 11 on the charm scale and has been serving the local sweet treat, “shave ice” since the 1940s.

When Barack Obama was a kid he would walk to the store to get this sweet Hawaii treat, and for those keeping score, that’s a two-fer on the icon charts, making it imminently collectible.

Which is totally Reyn.
