Lunar New Year Starts with a Bang at Waikiki Beach Walk

January 28, 2023 to January 28, 2023
Yellow and green Chinese lion“’Tis the season” is well worn phrase for the Christmas holiday season, but this year it is just as appropriate for January, as that month ‘tis this is year’s season for Waikiki Beach Walk’s annual Lunar New Year celebration that welcomes the Chinese Year of the Rabbit.

This year’s event will be held Saturday, January 28, and will be bigger and better than ever, as the spectacular Pole Jumping display will be returning to the lineup after a three-year pandemic absence.

The pole jumpers will accompany the traditional fireworks explosion and lion dance in a special showcase that begins at 5 p.m. at the Plaza.

The lion dance will then proceed in an exuberant and colorful parade throughout Waikiki Beach Walk, visiting each WBW store that wishes to “feed the lion” with cash gifts that according to ancient Chinese legend will ensure good fortune to that business for the coming year.

We will point out that this blessing of good fortune will also follow any individual who “feeds the lion,” and the traditional, red lai see envelopes that are the customary “diet” of the lion (i.e., preferred way to feed him) will be handed out free to those wishing for good luck.
