While many parts of the world are bundling up to keep warm by the time December rolls around, an average day in Hawaii still feels balmy with temperatures in the low 80s. At most, you might need a light jacket after the sun goes down, but that’s an easy trade-off for daytime weather that still feels like summer.
If you’re spending the holidays on Oahu, there are tons of exciting activities happening around the island. Out on the water, the 2019 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition is well underway on the North Shore with the World Cup of Surfing and Billabong Pipe Masters taking place until the 20th of this month. In addition, Hawaii’s whale watching season officially kicks off, making it a prime time to head out on a boat tour and witness these gentle giants enjoying the sea.
Here on land, the 35th Annual Honolulu City Lights celebration will illuminate the downtown area with a 50-foot tall Hawaiian Christmas tree, dazzling light displays, and family-friendly events starting on December 7th. The very next day, the 26-mile Honolulu Marathon begins, which will bring a staggering 25,000 runners right through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue so don’t forget to cheer!

Events You Won’t Want to Miss
Holiday Mele
Gather on the lawn in front of the Plaza stage and count down the days until Christmas from December 19–25! At 6:00pm-7:00pm each evening, join us as beautiful Hawaiian music fills the air and renowned hula schools from around the island spread love, warmth, and holiday cheer through Hawaii’s traditional dance. This is a wonderful opportunity to catch veteran kumus (teachers) and their award-winning groups perform different styles of hula in one place.
The holiday music showcase continues into Christmas Eve with contemporary Hawaiian music duo, Kamanawa, performing songs from their album, A Christmas With You! The countdown culminates on Christmas night as Kualoa—one of Honolulu’s most talented musical groups—takes us on a journey of Hawaiian music hits from then and now.
